I too was in the same position as the many females above. I am currently 8 months pregnant and quit using tobacco at 5 months. The only way I was able to do it was through the assistance of my doctor. I requested Wellbutrin and used the gum. Within 3 weeks I had the inner and outer strength to give it up. Wellbutrin is not given within the first trimester and is also considered dangerous. You have to weigh the options. I absolutely hated myself and could not understand how I could be doing this to my infant. On the other hand, it truly is not just a physical addiction. The Wellbutrin took the edge off. I’m not a doctor, but I highly recommend speaking with your physician about methods of quitting. Also, I might add that I have been a smoker for over 17 years. Now, I do not even think about it….

I’m almost 9 months pregnant and tried to give up at the beginning of my pregnancy and spoke to my midwife about it but then failed when I was about 3-4 months gone and started again and was so ashamed I didn’t mention it again to my midwife – I know its stupid and have made quite a few attempts because to stop to no avail but today have tried to stop again even though I only have a week left I know anything is better than nothing. I fear people’s reactions if I’m seen cigarette smoking but at the same time I completely understand them. I believe that unless you smoke yourself you will never truly know how difficult it is to give up. I dont have any children and have never been pregnant but i like to imagine that the day I am I could give up for my childs sake, but its one particular of those people things easier said than done. I am 32 weeks pregnant. I used to smoke 30 fags a day prior to finding out I was expecting, I stopped absolutely throughout the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy but over the course of the past 4 months I have gradually started using tobacco again up to (on a bad day) ten cigarettes a day. My baby is measuring above average in size for that No of weeks pregnant i am so the small infant factor is not true in my case and scans have reveiled no ill effects to the heart ( what could be seen on a scan in any event) i would be devestated if my child was born with any defects simply because of my selfish act, I really do wish I could stop but I’ve tried and it can be virtually impossible. i’ve thrown so many packets of fags away over the course of the last few months.

Well……… alot might be debated on this subject. I knew a girl who smoked when she was pregnant……….her argument was always that her mum did it, and the kids were fine…..I never had a response for that………However, parents should lead by example. And if you truly love your own flesh & blood, you would never ever allow for any harm to come to them by cigarette smoking.
